Andy Best (b. 1963) and Merja Puustinen’s (b. 1963) Archipelago won the invitational competition for an artwork to be sited in the Arcanum building, organised by the Finnish State Art Commission, the University of Turku, and University Properties of Finland Ltd in September 2022. The functional artwork alludes to Turku’s maritime history and comprises five oval plates that hang from the lobby’s ceiling, as well as three sittable islets made from recycled leather and denim in collaboration with upholsterer Maarit Kraappa. The movable islets can be arranged into different seating groups. The work was inaugurated in Arcanum on Wednesday 27 September 2023.
