Åbo Akademi University Foundation and Turku University Foundation jointly donated Carl-Gustaf Lilius’s (1928–1998) wire mesh sculpture The World Dance to Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku in 1995. The sculpture was hung in BioCity, in the lobby, where it is still on display.
Lilius’s wire mesh sculptures live in a constant state of change: light travels through the shapes, creating fleeting figures of light. Lilius, who is known both as a visual artist as well as a writer, studied at the School of the Fine Arts Academy of Finland’s sculpture class in 1949–1952. He is particularly remembered for his sculptures of dancing women.
