Leena Kartio (née Karumo, b. 1938) served as Professor of Civil Law at the University of Turku in 1978–2000 and as the Chancellor in 2000–2003. Kartio is the first woman to be appointed University Chancellor in Finland. During her career, she also worked as the Director of the Department of Private Law at the University of Turku in 1979–1981 and as the Dean of the Faculty of Law in 1985–1987. Kartio defended her doctoral dissertation, which explores the legal status of property owners, in 1974. Her published works include Esineoikeuden perusteet from 1991.

Kartio’s portrait in the University’s art collection was painted by Janne Myllynen (b. 1974) in 2003. Myllynen has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Finland and at the Repin Institute of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His works draw inspiration from art history, artistic tradition, and global political issues, such as wars and terrorism.
