Yrjö Collan (b. 1941) was appointed Professor of Pathology at the University of Turku in 1989. Collan has written several scientific studies in the field of modern pathology, including clinical pathology and electron microscopy.

In his portrait, unveiled on 6 November 2001, Collan is depicted among white windowpanes. Only his head and a small part of his shoulders are visible in the portrait; apart from Collan and the landscape seen through the two panes on the right, the remaining panels have been left empty. The portrait was painted by sculptor and painter Jarkko Roth (b. 1943), who is particularly known for his granite sculptures. Roth, who studied at the Turku Drawing School, is a distinguished medallist and has won several sculpture awards, including first prize in a medal design competition to commemorate Turku’s 750th anniversary in 1978.
