Pekka Laurén (1922–2016) served as Assistant Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Turku in 1966–1988. He also worked as a Research Associate and Laboratory Supervisor at the Department of Pathology in the 1950s and 1960s. In his research, Laurén focused mainly on the pathology of tumours of the digestive system.

In his portrait from 1982, Laurén is depicted in a determined pose, his white laboratory coat and the microscope behind him acting as his vocational attributes. The portrait was painted by artist Armas Mikola (1901–1983), who has painted several portraits in the University’s art collection. Known for his landscapes and portraits, Mikola received the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1975 and the title of Professor in 1982, a year before the artist’s death.
